Natural Crystal Inclusions: What They Are and What They Can Tell You

What counts as an inclusion?

These are observation categories, not a home identification key. Several kinds may occur together, and a cut or mounting can conceal the relationships between them.
Mineral inclusions are material inside material
An enclosed mineral may have formed before the surrounding crystal or alongside it. Its shape, color, arrangement, and relationship to other features can become useful evidence during examination. The fact that something is gold-colored, green, or needle-shaped is not enough to name it.
The distinction matters when a product description names a mineral. Ask whether that name is a supplier description or the result of testing, and whether it applies to the exact piece shown. A beautiful inclusion remains interesting even when its composition has not been established.
Fluid inclusions preserve small cavities
A fluid inclusion can contain liquid, gas, or several components together. Some form as a crystal grows; others relate to later fractures that heal and retain tiny amounts of fluid. Do not shake, heat, or press a stone to make a suspected bubble move. A safe observation does not need to become an experiment. If a seller highlights an unusual fluid feature, request a clear video and an explanation of what has actually been identified.
A fracture can also be part of the internal record
An inclusion and a fracture are not always mutually exclusive descriptions. Gem-A explains that some feather-like features are associated with fluids and partial healing of breaks during growth. What a phantom records
A phantom is an internal outline associated with an earlier stage of crystal growth. In a documented GIA example, mineral material was deposited on quartz surfaces, then enclosed as the quartz continued to grow. The layer traced the earlier form inside the larger crystal. How to observe without overclaiming

Record four things: the feature's color, shape, location, and whether its visibility changes with angle. A note such as “a pale reflective plane near the right edge, visible mainly from the side” gives a seller or gemologist something specific to examine.

Why inclusions do not automatically prove natural origin

A cloudy stone is therefore not automatically natural, and a clean one is not automatically synthetic. Character and durability are different questions

Ask about surface-reaching features, treatments, and the protection provided by the setting.
