Samantabhadra Thangka | Hand-Painted Bodhisattva of Great Practice and Universal Virtue

Samantabhadra, the Bodhisattva of Universal Virtue, embodies the perfect union of wisdom and compassionate action. He represents the principle that enlightenment is not found in isolation, but through selfless deeds dedicated to the welfare of all beings. In Mahayana Buddhism, Samantabhadra is the great vow-bearer — the one who turns understanding into virtue, reminding us that true wisdom manifests through right action and boundless compassion.

In this thangka, Samantabhadra sits in serene majesty upon a six-tusked white elephant — a symbol of the Six Perfections: generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom. His posture is composed and dignified, hands forming the Dharmachakra Mudra, the gesture of teaching and awakening. Draped in flowing green silk robes with a golden sash and jeweled ornaments, he radiates purity and balance. Behind him glows a golden circular halo adorned with floral patterns, illuminating the sacred atmosphere of the composition. The vivid palette of reds, blues, and greens reflects the rich tradition of the Karma Gadri style, known for its delicate lines and harmonious color blending.

Hand-painted in Lhasa, Tibet, this thangka follows traditional techniques preserved for centuries. Natural mineral pigments — malachite for greens, azurite for blues, cinnabar for reds — are ground by hand and layered with exquisite precision. Each delicate line and brushstroke embodies the artist’s devotion, transforming pigment and canvas into a meditative act of offering. The result is a painting designed not just to be seen, but to be felt — a living expression of spiritual beauty and inner peace.

Created by Lixindi, a recognized master of Tibetan intangible cultural heritage, this Samantabhadra Thangka reflects over thirty years of disciplined artistry. Renowned for his mastery in linework and facial rendering, Lixindi’s paintings are celebrated for their lifelike depth — legends say that the more vivid the face, the stronger the Buddha’s blessing. His work bridges devotion and artistry, infusing each thangka with a spirit that feels both ancient and alive.

Beyond its artistic brilliance, this thangka embodies the essence of Samantabhadra’s vow — the aspiration to awaken and serve all beings with courage and clarity. Display it in your home, meditation space, or temple to invite the blessings of wisdom, purity, and steadfast virtue. For practitioners, it is a mirror of right conduct; for collectors, a timeless masterpiece of sacred Tibetan art.

“Wisdom revealed through compassionate action.”
Invite the enlightened presence of Samantabhadra — a hand-painted thangka symbolizing purity, strength, and the boundless vow of universal virtue.
