The support: cloth, preparation, and ground
Many traditional painted thangkas begin with tightly woven cloth stretched on a temporary frame. The measured drawing beneath the color

What holds the color in place?
Dry pigment needs a binder to adhere to the prepared surface. The Saraha study found a protein-based medium in blue and green layers that was probably animal glue, but the analysis could not determine the animal species.

A full scroll-format thangka often combines the painted panel with silk or brocade borders, wooden rods, ribbons, and a protective veil. The central painting and its mounting can age differently, and a mounting may be replaced during the object's history.
Miniature or jewelry-format works may present a painted panel in a rigid frame rather than a traditional textile scroll. That difference describes format; it does not by itself decide whether the image was hand-painted, how old it is, or which pigments were used.
